2019-20 student Leadership
For those students who feel led by God’s Spirit to servant leadership at Wesley, we want to nurture you and help you engage in an avenue of service that unites your gifts/passions with the needs of our ministry. As God desires faithful leadership (Lk 10:27, 1 Cor 12,1 Peter 1:13-16), we call upon our leaders to the following (approximately a 3-4 hour weekly commitment):
- Meet with with the campus ministry or current student leader(s) to discern leadership opportunities.
- Continue in your discipleship journey at Wesley, which includes attending Wed. Night Worship, regularly reading scripture, regularly praying for our campus ministry, and weekly involvement in one of our small groups or individual mentoring.
- Serve on your discerned ministry team.
- Along with all leaders at Wesley, support and honor our Leadership Covenant (read below).
Appalachian Wesley Foundation LEADERSHIP Covenant
God’s greatest commandment, our focus:
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself (Luke 10:27).
God’s call for the Wesley Foundation, our mission:
Our mission is to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world through campus ministry” (see Matt. 28:19-20 & John 3:17). We carry out our mission with a threefold emphasis:
God’s call for holiness as we bear the image of God, our witness:
Prepare your minds for action; discipline yourselves; set all your hope on the grace that Jesus Christ will bring you when he is revealed. Like obedient children, do not be conformed to the desires that you formerly had in ignorance. Instead, as God who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your living; for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy” (1 Peter 1:13-16). We strive to have holiness of heart and life, especially as we encounter prominent matters in a university community that affect personal and social holiness. Therefore, for the pursuit of holiness and for the integrity of our witness, we commit:
For the glory of God, we make this covenant as ministry leaders in the Appalachian Wesley Foundation to focus on God’s greatest commandment, to uphold our God given mission, and to pursue holiness as a witness for Christ to the world.
- Be Loved - We desire everyone to know they are a beloved child of God.
- Follow Jesus - We desire everyone to experience the love of Christ and choose to follow him as a disciple.
- Live Fully - We desire everyone to freely, passionately, and faithfully live into God’s call for their life while in college and beyond.
- to honor God’s gift of the sabbath through being good stewards of time, which includes periods of work and restoration, and intentionally setting apart time to God for worship and rest;
- to honor God’s gift of community through seeking God’s best for our community, respecting those in leadership, and leading as humble servants of the Lord and the community of faith;
- to honor God’s gift of freedom through living a life of sobriety, adhering to laws concerning controlled substances, and prayerfully discerning actions while avoiding anything that would cause others to stumble (i.e., underaged drinking or drinking in settings where others are getting drunk);
- to honor God’s gift of sexuality through celibacy in singleness, fidelity in marriage, and sexual integrity in all relationships and circumstances (i.e., "shacking up" / sleeping over with the opposite sex);
- to honor God’s gift of grace through acknowledging our failures, claiming God’s forgiveness, and living as new creations in Christ, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.
For the glory of God, we make this covenant as ministry leaders in the Appalachian Wesley Foundation to focus on God’s greatest commandment, to uphold our God given mission, and to pursue holiness as a witness for Christ to the world.
