A paid tuition, credit based internship helping students discern vocation, faith, and next steps beyond college.
The FTE Discernment Lab at Appalachian Wesley Foundation (App Wesley) is a transformative internship program designed for junior and senior students at Appalachian State University, regardless of major. Rooted in Wesleyan theology and Christian spiritual practice, the program creates a rare and intentional space for students to slow down, ask deep questions, and discern their calling before graduation.
Through this credit based internship—with tuition covered by the FTE Discernment Grant—students integrate faith, academic passions, and hands on ministry experience within a trusted, mentored environment.
• Credit based internship (up to 3 credit hours per semester)
• Tuition support provided, removing financial barriers
• Open to students from any academic discipline
• Grounded in Wesleyan/Methodist tradition and theology
• Combines spiritual formation, mentorship, and real ministry leadership
Interns serve within the long standing ministry of the Appalachian Wesley Foundation, a 71 year old campus ministry with a strong history of mentoring students into vocational clarity, ministry, and graduate theological education.
Students will:
• Practice spiritual disciplines and theological reflection
• Explore Christian vocation and calling through structured discernment tools
• Participate in hands on ministry leadership with college students
• Design and lead programming that integrates their academic field with ministry
• Receive one on one mentorship from a campus pastor
• Engage with seminary/divinity school professors and conference leaders
• Participate in Methodist heritage experiences, including possible travel
College juniors and seniors often face pressure to make life defining decisions quickly. The Discernment Lab offers something rare: a safe, structured space for praxis—where students can test what they are learning, reflect deeply, and grow with trusted guides before making major life commitments.
Interns don’t just talk about vocation—they practice discernment, gaining clarity, confidence, and wisdom for what comes next.
The FTE Discernment Lab at App Wesley forms students who:
• Are rooted in intentional spiritual practice
• Have experience leading and shaping ministry
• Understand how faith intersects with their gifts and education
• Are better prepared to serve the church and the world with clarity and purpose
By investing in this program, App Wesley helps cultivate a new generation of leaders who have practiced discernment, tested their calling, and learned to listen deeply before taking their next steps.
